Any photo works: a portrait, a beloved pet, a landscape or a favourite painting. Two things are read from it at once, the colours, which will be matched against real thread, and the proportions, which the chart keeps exactly. Clear images with good contrast and the subject large in the frame work best; very fine detail, such as individual strands of hair or small text, does not survive the move to cross stitch no matter how large you make the chart. The file may be up to 10 MB.
